about

Japanese drummer and composer, living in France since 2000. Yuko develops her musical language on drums through improvisation and composition with musicians, dancers, and actors. Her musical research leads her to broaden the sound possibilities, expand her musical universe and also her drumming technique while keeping her passion for sound, rhythm and groove. Her accessories, notably Japanese bowls in her intrumentarium, and the appearance of her voice, offer her possibilities to make her sound universe unique and original. In 2022, Yuko is laureate of the Kujoyama villa where she deepens her musical knowledge on Nagauta, a Japanese traditional music, especially through singing. This residency allows her to enrich and deepen her journey in search of her musical identity.

In 2015, Yuko set up the duo ‘bishinkodo’ with Eric Broitmann (Motus) on acousmonium (speaker orchestra) to realize her idea of creating drum music for a drum set and electronics; a true mixture of acoustic and electronic sounds forming a vast soundscape. This project shows her affection towards the search for new sounds and a new musical approach that she keeps since the beginning of her musical life having crossed rock, jazz, contemporary and pop music.

In 2018, she invited Samuel Colard (piano) and Vincent Robert (modular synthesizer, from ‘la colonie de vacances’) to create an improvisation trio ‘Hiyoméki’ in order to realize and concretize her musical idea that she had been imagining for some time; focusing on the singular sound work of the group with vast influences of rock, jazz, pop and contemporary music and also on the instantaneous compositional work in the improvisation to create a unique musical journey in depth.

She appears in projects such as a drum duo with Hamid DRAKE, a trio with Isabelle DUTHOIT (voice, clarinet) and Soizic LEBRAT (cello), the trio ‘SAN’ with Satoko Fujii (piano), Taiko Saito (vibraphone) and also ‘LAUROSHILAU’ with 2 Brussels women Pak Yan LAU (piano, electronics) and Audrey LAURO (alto saxophone) which will release two albums in 2022 and 2023 from el NEGOCITO records.  She also plays in Japan, notably in the trio ‘GAKUSEI JIKKEN SHITSU’ with Ryoko ONO (saxophone) and Hiroki ONO (electronics) which prepares its 2nd album for 2023. She is preparing two projects following her residency in Japan in 2022 where she learned the traditional Nagauta song in order to create music inspired by this song. In addition, she regularly collaborates with dancers, such as Damien BRIANÇON (from the Cie ‘l’espèce de collectif’) for his two pieces « SOURDRE » and « Sortir de l’arbre », and also with the Cie Kubilai Khan Investigation, She also appears in a play ‘SCENES OF CONJUGAL VIOLENCE’ directed by Gerard WATKINS since 2016 as a musician and actress, and is creator of the music for a play ‘Tropique de la violence’ by Alexandre Zeff, and ‘Où cours tu comme ça? ‘ by Kathleen Fortin in 2021.

She has been seen in many jazz festivals such as; Berlin, Moers, Tokyo, Tampere, Saalfelden, Paris, Moldo, London, Vancouver, Ottawa etc, and also other various artistic places like Museum of Contemporary art Chicago, Centre Pompidou, Festival d’Avignon.
